More information on the event and fundraiser below.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Over the last two years Pecola Breedlove & The Freedom Party has created a platform for poets (and musicians) to share their work on a weekly basis. We're an open mic based in West Philadelphia just a few blocks down from the Philly Zoo at A Poet's Art Gallery on 40th & Girard. The open mic takes place every Tuesday from 7 to 9PM and only costs $5.00. The goal of the event is to provide a welcoming space for people to share poetry, hear poetry, and interact with other like minded individuals within the African American and artistic communities of Philadelphia. Over the last two years we've been able to extend opportunities to local poets, regional poets, national poets, and international poets. With the help of our audience, over the last two years we've been able to pay over $7,000 to feature performers who are often full time poets. We've been able to create opportunities for small business owners who vend at our event weekly, and we've been able to create opportunities for poets who want to gain experience within hosting poetry events for the first time. Most importantly, we've been able to create an atmosphere of love and appreciation based around the art of poetry. Our open mic has been a gathering place for many in response to the police brutality that our community has suffered over the last few years. This atmosphere is a form of church for some and a form of therapy for others.

On Friday, September 30th we'll be holding a fundraiser event for Pecola Breedlove & The Freedom Party. This fundraiser event will allow us to gather the funds to keep going for another two years. It will also allow us to keep our event at an affordable weekly price for anyone who wants to attend. While our audience always chips in on making sure our features are compensated we do have quite a few other expenses that have to be taken care of on weekly basis as well. These expenses include building fees, promotion fees (photography, flyer designs, hard copy flyers), transportation for out of town artists, lodging and food for out of town artists, and compensating our team for the hard work they put in on a weekly basis. We want to make sure that the event continues to be beneficial for everyone involved including our audience, our features, the artists who sign the open mic, our venue owners, and our team. This fundraiser event is being held to insure the stability of the event so that we can continue to be a positive addition to the poetry community and the overall artists community in Philadelphia. Our goal is to raise $1,000 with all proceeds going towards Pecola Breedlove & The Freedom Party.

The fundraiser event will take place on Friday, September 30th from 8 to 11PM. Doors will open at 7:30PM. We will have five feature performances by Little Tree, Jaylene Clark Owens, Justin Graham, Danielle Blackmon, and Justin Graham. We will have a limited open mic as well which will include five poets. There will be a segment during the event that honors the history of open mic poetry in the city of Philadelphia. We'll also have raffles and food entrees available for purchase. All funds from the raffle and food will go towards our fund-raising goal of $1,000. Tickets for the event are $10 online and $20 at the door. All ticket orders will go towards our fund-raising goal. In addition to ticket orders, we'll also be accepting online donations of any amount up until the night of the event. Donations will be accepted at the event as well. Come on out and join us on Friday, September 30th and feel free to donate online even if you aren't able to attend the night of the event. We appreciate Philly supporting this event over the last two years and we're looking forward to more successful years of Pecola Breedlove & The Freedom Party with your continued appreciation and support.
