AIARE September Membership Lunch
Program Title: Application of the California Building Code for Existing Buildings as it pertains to Architectural and Structural Design

Presenter: A Conversation with Kevin Zucco, SE. LEED AP

AIA Learning Units: 1

Firm Spotlight:
Eric Glass of Glass Architects

AIA Members receive Lunch compliments of: Basalite

A large percentage of the design and construction community's current work has to do with existing buildings. The Existing Structures chapter in the 2010 CBC was substantially re-worked in the current code iteration. The 2010 code more clearly defines parameters for modifying existing buildings, giving the design team and plan checkers better tools to approach reasonable solutions. The information included in this presentation is intended to assist Architects in understanding the intent of the current code and the design parameters.

Learning Objectives
To define levels of modification as described in the Existing Structures chapter of the 2010 CBC
Identify key points for use in designing architectural/structural improvements for existing buildings
Understand the triggers for scope of structural work
Apply key points to example projects
Outline what is to come in future code iterations as they apply to existing structures
