Event

Feldenkrais: Seeing Through the Knee
With Andrew Gibbons.

Without a clear understanding of the specific way the knee joints provide support, the benefits of even our best ATM and FI experiences on the floor can start to degrade and wither in the first moments of standing up or in our first few steps away from the mat. Every competent practitioner needs to be able to "see through" the functioning of their client's knees, as well as their own. As the largest joints in the body, their size alone should warrant our best efforts towards mastery. But considering the knee's seminal role as the site of Dr. Feldenkrais' original crippling injury (the painful spark that lead him to create the work), every student of this method should feel a certain historical pull to become something of an expert on the function of the knees.

In this workshop we will deepen our understanding of the knee as a gliding joint. Andrew Gibbons will introduce you to both the positional rules for better stability and support through the knees in sitting and standing, and the dynamic internal function of the surfaces of the femur, tibia and fibula upon each other inside the joint space. In addition to a lecture/demonstration and ATM, we will explore a specific standing practice that you can use with clients to elicit this function that is both simple, direct and effective.

This workshop will build on the ideas and principles that Andrew presented in the February 2012 PDG workshop on the foot and ankle.  For those wanting to familiarize themselves with this perspective prior to the workshop, read:  I.A. Kapandji's Physiology of the Joints:  Volume 2 Lower Limb, pages 84-89 (especially pg 88 and diagrams on 89).
