Ojai Film Society and Ojai Film Festival present: Ixcanul
This beautifully shot, award-winning Guatemalan film by director Jayro Bustamante tells the coming-of-age story of Maria, a young Mayan girl of the Kaqchikel tribe. Working the coffee orchards and living off the land at the base of one of the volcanoes near Lake Atitlan, Maria is promised to the coffee plantations manager. But she pines for Pépé, who in turn is in thrall to the siren song of America. When Marias unplanned pregnancy threatens to undo her familys hopes and dreams, including shattering their standing in the small agrarian community, Maria takes a single step that alters all their lives. In so doing, she finally must confront the customs of her own culture.
. . . a transporting, hypnotically beautiful debut feature. Scott Foundas, Variety
