Lecture Details What happens when an American nursing student travels to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania? This firsthand account begins with Heathers arrival, when she found herself terrified by the lack of supplies for patient care, risks of personal exposure to disease, and primitive practices. But over five weeks, she and her hosts built relationships and learned from one another. She came to respect the creativity of the nurses and doctors working with limited resources. And they benefited from her knowledge of modern western medical practices.
Heather Averbeck
Heather Averbeck is a senior nursing student at Northern Kentucky University with plans to graduate in December 2016. She grew up in Northern Kentucky and attended Notre Dame Academy for High School. She has worked at Cincinnati Childrens Hospital for the past three years as a nurse assistant. Upon graduation, Heather plans to continue her nursing career working with the pediatric population.
This summer, Heather spent five weeks studying abroad in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. During her stay in Tanzania Heather spent the majority of her practicum experience working among local nurses on a delivery unit in a small community hospital. Heather was able to learn about how the nurses have adapted to working with minimal supplies and resources. Heather was able to eventually work among the nurses performing procedures, delivering babies, and resuscitating a stillborn baby. Heather was also able to learn about a local AIDS foundation, as well as visit orphanages and perform nursing care for some of the children.
