Orfeia Celebrates 10 Years of Balkan Vocal Music!

Orfeia Vocal Ensemble, directed by Tatiana Sarbinska, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with an evening concert of traditional Balkan songs at the Washington Ethical Society on Saturday, November 5th at 7 pm. The all-woman vocal group will perform a selection of songs highlighting the unique rhythms, harmonies, and stories drawn from the villages of Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, and other parts of Eastern Europe. Join us as we close the concert with lively dance tunesinviting audience participationand celebrate with a post-concert reception and craft sale.

Tickets are $15; children 10 and under are free.

Childrens workshop at 11:30 am: $15 per child (discount for siblings);
Adult workshop at 2 pm: $20.

Founded in 2006 by the legendary Bulgarian singer Tatiana Sarbinska, Orfeia is dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional music from Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. Orfeias repertoire spans the rich and varied musical heritage of Bulgaria and the Balkans, Russia and Eastern Europe, Greece and Georgiafrom traditional to sacred, and from the Middle Ages to modern day. The captivating and diverse sounds of the Balkans are given voice through unique harmonies and rhythms, unusual vocal ornaments, village songs, custom songs with overlapping lines, antiphonal songs with drones, seasonal music, and childrens songs.

In 2007, Orfeia made its debut at a gala concert in Sofia, Bulgaria featuring and honoring Tatiana Sarbinska and including an all-star roster of traditional singers and instrumentalists. Orfeia also made its D.C. debut in 2007. Orfeia has performed in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria with the Pirin Ensemble, one of Bulgarias foremost national folk companies, at the National Festival of Bulgarian Folklore in Koprivshtitsa, at national competitions for compositions based on traditional Bulgarian music in Chepelare and Sofia, and in concerts in Sofia, Plovdiv and other cities throughout Bulgaria. Orfeia has been featured on The Slavi Show, Bulgarias most popular late-night television program, and on Bulgarian National Radio.Based in Montgomery County, Maryland, Orfeia has been the recipient of grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Arts, the Humanities Council of Montgomery County, and the Saint George Foundation.Orfeia is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Tatiana Sarbinska, the founder and director of Orfeia, is a world-renowned Balkan vocalist, composer, teacher and director. Born in the village of Rila, Bulgaria, she began singing as a child and rose to become one of the pre-eminent singers of her generation. For many years, she was the featured soloist of the internationally-acclaimed Pirin Ensemble, touring throughout the world and making numerous recordings and films for television. Her encyclopedic repertoire includes music from all of Bulgarias folklore regions as well as the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Tatiana's extraordinary mastery of Eastern European music and vocal technique is matched by her unique ability to teach it to others, from beginner to professional. After teaching and directing at universities in Bulgaria, Tatiana went on teach  and direct many Balkan ensembles and musical groups throughout the United States. She is currently the artistic director of three choruses, Divi Zheni and Zornitsa in the Boston area, and Orfeia in Washington, D.C. Tatiana has been awarded National Treasure status as The Voice of Bulgaria by the Bulgarian government in recognition of her artistry and for preservation of Bulgarian musical heritage, and she has won numerous awards for her singing, composing and her contributions to Bulgarian culture.
