Beekeeping 101 Class
The Ashland Beekeepers Association (Virginia) is holding its annual fall beekeeping class for those interested in getting started in beekeeping. The class allows newcomers to make more intelligent decisions about the direction they wish to take; and gives them ample time to obtain the gear, equipment, and to pre-order bees for delivery the following spring. The all-day class (which includes lunch & book) will begin by covering the social order, life cycle and job functions of the honey bee. From there, the class goes into the different ways to obtain bees, where best to place them on your property, and how to install them into your new equipment. The class continues by displaying the necessary gear and equipment, and demos how to use it. Once your bees are in place, the biggest hurdle is how to monitor and manage them as the seasons progress. The class takes the new beekeeper through the first year's management and hopefully gives them the best chance possible for a surviving colony the following spring. Finally, the class will cover the various problems the beekeeper might encounter including pests, disease, and pesticides. Check-in: 8:30 a.m. Class starts: 9:00 a.m. and ends: 4:00 p.m.
Beekeeping Basics - a book published by Penn State University will be provided.
Lunch will include turkey subs, chicken salad subs, pasta salad, garden salad, cookies. (No discount if lunch is not desired.) Coffee, tea, and water is included in registration fee and will be available all day.
