Oudyano in Concert
Oudyano in Concert Issam Rafea (oud) and Steven Hobert (piano) 23 Sept, 7 pm Pre-concert talk, 6:30 pm $15 general admission, $10 for ECMS students
Oudyano is a collaboration between Minneapolis-based pianist, Stevenen Hobert (FireFlyForest, Steven Hobert Quartet, Kalispell) and oudist, Issam Rafea, a virtuoso Syrian musician now residing in the U.S. (2010 "Best Composer Award" Dubai International Film Festival, principal conductor Syrian National Orchestra for Arabic Music, a collaboration with Gorillaz, and numerous other ensembles and international performances.)
Their performances are almost entirely improvised and blend the harmonies of jazz with classical Arabic modes.
In their own words: Oudyano joins hearts to create music that sensitively peers inward, boldly prays outward; crawling with curiosity, then leaping into clouds. Arabic classical tradition meets American jazz & roots to delight audiences through the world peace enacted by their embrace. After the first notes these men ever played together, they both cried out with joy.
The school is very excited to offer this unique opportunity to hear two outstanding musicians in the intimate setting of our recital room. Issam Rafea will also give a pre-concert talk about Arabic music, including the importance of improvisation.
