About this Cause:
It is estimated that 48 women are raped every hour in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Source: Nobel Women's Initiative, 2014).
Founder and President of SOFEPADI Julienne Lusenge speaks to the violence against women amidst the conflict in the DRC, saying,
"When armed groups confront one another, it is the women who pay. Women's bodies are used as battlefields-and this must end."
The SOFEPADI Fundraiser is a private event with a focus on:
1). RAISING AWARENESS of the cultural and societal practices that allow gender inequalities to continue to constrain women in the DRC and the effect on ancillary African countries. 2). EMPOWERING our professional and social networks to catalyze change 3). CONTRIBUTING FUNDS to further SOFEPADI's important mission
SOFEPADI is based in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The organization SOFEPADI is based in the DRC. Its' mission is to rehabilitate, reintegrate and train survivors of sexual violence as a result of the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo. SOPEPADI's work is exemplary in its' targeted and focussed activism and is so important in ensuring a future for the people and communities whose lives are being ravaged by the conflict.
SOFEPADI provides support for victims through, educational, legal and counseling services. It organizes campaigns on laws against sexual violence, counseling for victims and capacity building both in terms of education and skills training, and pairs with more than 30 different Congolese women's organizations seeking to raise awareness about sexual violence in the DRC.
SOFEPADI also aims to restore women's familial and societal leadership roles in the DRC and helps rape survivors bring their cases before the Congolese court system to seek reparations.
Sometimes the media portrays women of the DRC as victims.
Ms. Lusenge wants everyone to know that the women in the DRC and Africa in general are agents of change. They are warriors for justice, peace, and dignity and they deserve to have their voices heard.
