PRESENTED BY NARAL PRO-CHOICE MINNESOTA

Rock for your Rights is a concert to raise money and awareness about reproductive rights in Minnesota!  NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota is a grassroots movement focused on guaranteeing every woman the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.  We accomplish this through public education, citizen lobbying, and pro-choice voter mobilization. Our focus is both national and statewide.

MURDER SHOES:

Sometimes, it really does boil down to who you know. Shortly after Derek Van Gieson first moved to Minneapolis, he met fellow guitarist Chris White through an ex-post-hardcore-punk pal. For a year or so, Derek and Chris stockpiled hundreds of songs. The songs ran the gamut of 60s pop/garage nuggets, gothic folk, chaotic post-punk, 80s funk and R&B, country/western, shoegaze, rockabilly, and surf. It could have been a real hot mess, but Derek brought Tess Weinberg in to the picture and she tied the whole thing together with her sultry cross-genre vocals. They further refined their sound as a trio and just when they thought they had it figured out, bassist Tim Heinlein and drummer Elliot Manthey brought the volume, power, and muscle.

Inside of a year as a quintet, Murder Shoes recorded and released three EPs, a full length album, and went on tour. After many adventures in the studio and live, the band has refined the eclectic nature of their sound, which can now accurately be described as Murder Shoesy.

BRUISE VIOLET:

Bruise Violet is an "angry harmonic grunge punk" band, made up of the members Emily, Bella, and Danielle. Deriving their sound from the roots of the Riot Grrrl movement, the girls are loud and angry, while wearing dresses and looking as feminine as possible on stage. They add their own twist with three part harmonies on top of the loud riffs playing. It's like Broadway meets Bikini Kill.

THE LONG ODDS:

The Long Odds are a well-rounded and experienced lineup consisting of former members of Minneapolis alt-country band Western Fifth and local Big Star cover band, Big Gurls and current bass player for local Minneapolis band, Murder Shoes. Rooted in classic country, bluegrass, and folk rock, original songs mix soothing vocal harmonies, dark ambient electric guitar, and rich organ sounds while being driven steadily by a thick, hard hitting rhythm section. Members are MIssy Heinlein - Vocals, Keys/Tim Heinlein - Vocals, Guitar/Jonas Lader - Vocals, Drums/Mike Fruncillo  Bass Guitar/Jason Streitz - Vocals, Guitar.

LAKEWOOD CEMETARY:

Lakewood Cemetery is an indie folk duo comprised of Minneapolis locals Dan Krzykowski and Katrina Schleisman. Their original songs span from country to bluegrass to folk to rock. Dan plays guitar and both musicians deliver thoughtful lyrics together with tight harmonies. Their debut album was released in summer 2015, and they were recently chosen as semi-finalists for the Star Tribune's "Are You Local?" 2016 best new band contest.

JOHANNA MATHEWS:

Johanna Mathews is a Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter. Hermusic is a haunting, soulful and contemplative. We live in a quickly changing world where sexual and racial discrimination, poverty, terrorism and the like provoke questions about an individual's purpose. Music creates a space for simultaneous observation of our reality. The struggle is real and so is the downright breathtaking wonder of existence. Lets talk about it.
