Day of Learning with Farrah Khan and Deepa Mattoo
Not in Our Name: Community Approaches to Addressing Forced Marriage and Honour Based Violence training is grounded in intersectional, anti-racist, feminist, survivor centered framework. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the complexities of forced marriage and honour related violence, best practices when working with survivors as well effective service delivery models. Together we will explore the needs of survivors of family violence, specifically "honour" related violence/forced marriage, and the role service providers can play in effectively engaging with them. This hands-on skill building workshop series for frontline workers aims to increase access to service for survivors by providing participants with: Increased knowledge of impact of "honour" related violence/forced marriage Promising practice tools and resources on prevention Information on family and immigration law Needs-assessment, safety planning and creative intervention strategies for addressing "honour" related violence/forced marriage Deepa Mattoo is Staff Lawyer and has been Interim Executive Director at the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario in Toronto, Canada. Her initial practice in India, focusing on Criminal and Civil matters, was a catalyst for her efforts towards increasing access to justice for vulnerable groups. After moving to Canada she became involved with the South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO), where she advocates for vulnerable groups, particularly South Asian women, and is resident expert on Forced Marriages/ Honour based Violence. Deepa has presented on forced marriage and honour-based violence at numerous Canadian and international events and conferences, and organizes and participates in national trainings and awareness raising activities for diverse legal, service provider, and government audiences. For her community work she was presented the Spirit of the Barbra Schlifer Award in 2015 and Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 2016.
Farrah Khan is a counsellor, educator and artist with 17 years of experience addressing gender-based violence. She is the Sexual Violence Education and Support Coordinator at Ryerson University and is co-chair of the Provincial Roundtable on Violence Against Women. Farrah has co-created innovative community-centered initiatives including Heartbeats: the IZZAT Project, Use the Right Words: Media Reporting on Sexual Violence in Canada and Outburst! Young Muslim Women Project. She has conducted trainings across North America on violence against women and co-developed a risk assessment/safety planning tool on honor related violence and forced marriage. Farrah is regularly sought out by national media including the CBC and the Globe and Mail for her expertise in addressing violence against women. She has been presented with various awards including the Toronto Community Foundation's Vital People Award.
