Historic Oakwood Walking Tour:
Just a few blocks northeast of downtown Raleigh, the state Capital; you will transported back in time to the early 20th century. Walking along the tree lined streets your personnel tour guide will show fascinating architectural homes, and events of interest. Hear the stories of movies that were filmed here in Historic Oakwood. See where Gregory Peck & Lauren Bacall filmed Painted Churches. Plus, Natalie Wood was here in 1981, the year of her dreadful drowning shooting Brainstorm.
The multi-block National Historic district boasts homes built in the Queen Anne and Victoria style with a southern accent. By the 1890's, Oakwood had become a fashionable suburb with paved Belgian stone from Wake County granite. Thanks to the hard work of "Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood" most of the homes have been lovingly restored to their original state, with steep slate roofs and a rich palette of paint colors.
The crown jewel of the district is the Oakwood Cemetery. First deeded in 1869 its winding paved roads present a tranquil picture fitting of the final resting place for many of North Carolin's finest citizens. The natural topography, the oaks, the meandering stream and numerous types of monuments are all elements which make this a must see stop while in Raleigh.
