Cover Cropping On a Diversified Farm: Economics, Agronomy and Results
Description: Most organic and ecological farmers already know the virtues of cover crops, like weed control, nutrient retention, and better soil tilth. But the utility of a cover crop ultimately comes down to the details: when and what to plant, how to incorporate the seed, how and when to terminate the crop, and where it fits best into your crop rotation.
At Alprilla Farm, Noah and his team have been using a variety of cover crops for a number of years, including cash cover crops like wheat, barley, and dry beans. This workshop will give you an in-depth look at their system and the economic rationale behind it. Noah will go over a number of strategies to use cover crops at various farm scales and also discuss options for innovative techniques such as intercropping cover crops with cash crops, undersowing, and cocktail cover cropping.
About the Instructor: Noah Kellerman is the farmer at Alprilla Farm in Essex, MA. The farm raises ecological vegetables and grains that are distributed through a CSA, the Cape Ann Farmers Market and other local venues. Noah started Alprilla Farm in its current form with his friend Ford Tucker Smith in 2011. From welding, wholesaling, designing the crop rotation to tending cows, he has a hand in just about everything that goes on.
