Finding the Lyric Essay
LitSpace Literary Arts Institute at Morean Arts Center
Saint Petersburg, FL
Share this event:

Writer John DAgata offers the following definition for the lyric essay: "The lyric essay partakes of the poem in its density and shapeliness, its distillation of ideas and musicality of language. It partakes of the essay in its weight, in its overt desire to engage with facts, melding its allegiance to the actual with its passion for imaginative form."

The lyric essay lives bordered by poetry and creative nonfiction and braids the forms together in order to create a meaningful and cohesive expression. In this class we will read examples of lyric essays, examine the craft and form, and have a discussion on what makes a lyric essay. Students will also have to opportunity to write and share excerpts of their own short lyric essays.
