Crapemyrtles light up the landscape with brilliant color in the intense heat of summer when few other plants are blooming. Many also feature bright fall foliage and striking bark patterns, making them one of the most beautiful and versatile trees in our area. Learn all about this garden gem, from breeding and research to selecting and growing them at home.
Start in the classroom with geneticist Dr. Margaret Pooler, who will discuss the National Arboretum's successful breeding program, then drive out to the Arboretums Gotelli collection for a walking tour with horticulturist George Waters, where you can see and learn about more than 30 varieties of mature trees in peak bloom. Learn how to choose and use these summer beauties in any landscape by comparing the full range of sizes, flower colors, forms, and bark colors.
Note- please dress for the weather. The tour portion of the program will involve some moderate walking and it could be a hot day. There will not be a rain date for this tour. We will get in touch with participants before the tour if the forecast does not look promising.
