Join us to welcome Bay Area photographer Ken Light as he presents his new photo book, What's Going On? 1969 - 1974, selected by Vogue, Photo-Indendent and Mother Jones Magazine as one of the top photo books of the year. As a young photographer Ken traveled around the country from 1969-1972, documenting one of the most turbulent periods in American history. He followed Richard Nixon, war protests, prisoners of war coming home, as well as some quiet, profound moments of daily American life.
According to Ken, "Theres an animosity that came out of that time and I think part of [publishing the book] is wanting to put down my record of what I saw and what I think happened; what we need to see and not forget.
After striking out with publishers, even with 8 published books, Light decided to take matters into his own hands and ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to publish the book.
Ken Light is a social documentary photographer whose work has appeared in books, magazines, solo exhibitions at the Oakland Museum, San Jose Museum of Art, ICP in New York City and his work is in numerous anthologies, exhibition catalogues and a variety of media, digital and motion picture. He is the Reva and David Logan Professor of Photojournalism and curator of the Center for Photography at the Graduate School of Journalism at UC Berkeley, and was the 2012 Laventhol Visiting Professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
