Capitol Hill Renter Summit
Are you a renter on Capitol Hill? Is your rent going up? Are you worried that your community is getting priced out? Want to do something about it?

Then join us at the first ever Capitol Hill Renter Summit!  We're bringing together 100 renters from 100 different buildings across Capitol Hill to start working on a plan to represent renters' in our neighborhood and at City Hall.

The event will feature food, performances, and conversations about how we as renters can use our collective voice to shape the future of our neighborhood.  It's all free, and childcare will be provided. Here's a detailed overview of what to expect:

The program will start with a meal and a chance to meet your renter neighbors. Local poet Michelle PeƱaloza will officially kick off the day with a reading before a short welcome by Mayor Murray.

Former Councilmember Nick Licata, author of Becoming a Citizen Activist, will then provide an opening address on civic engagement. After his address, local performance art group Vis-a-vis Society will conduct a group survey.

Sara Maxana, Principal Planner with Puget Sound Regional Council and Shefali Ranganathan, Executive Director at Transportation Choices Coalition will help ground our discussions with presentations on two critical issues facing the neighborhood: affordability and mobility.

The most important part of the day comes next: attendees will delve deep into these issues in facilitated discussion groups led by some of our Renter Leaders.

After the group has had time to debate and discuss, House Speaker Frank Chopp, State Senator Jamie Pedersen, King County Metro Deputy Director Victor Obeso and Councilmembers Kshama Sawant and Rob Johnson will join us for a live Q&A session.

The Summit will wrap up with ways to commit to next steps and staying engaged.

For those who want to keep the conversation going, we will migrate over to a local bar for happy hour, led by the marching band One Love.

This project is funded in part by a Neighborhood Matching Fund award from the City of Seattle, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.
