DESCRIPTION OF BUTLER GREENWOOD PLANTATION Begun in the 1790s by members of the same family that still occupies it today, Butler Greenwood Plantation exemplifies the early cultural influences of this unique corner of Louisiana. Earliest settlers came to this area from the East Coast soon after the American Revolution. From the wilderness they carved great plantations on grants of land offered by the Spanish Crown, for this area was not part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase from France, remaining with Spanish West Florida until 1810. The area exhibits strong evidence of English traditions and culture. A typical, early raised, rambling English cottage, Butler Greenwood is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is a private home in the original family and is no longer open for tours. Guests may enjoy the pool, the duck pond, and hikes around the cottages. Humphrey, the resident peacock, fills the air intermittently with his haunting cries. The house and guest cottages are shaded by large, ancient oak trees, covered with Spanish moss. Butler Greenwood has a huge population of birds and wildlife, including herons on the pond, white-tailed deer, foxes, bobcats, chipmunks, and squirrels, along with resident cats and dog Toby. Owner Anne Butler is the author of numerous books and articles (Google her many accomplishments), and she has been most generous and helpful with the plans for this retreat. Anyone who wishes to book an extra night at Butler Greenwood should contact Anne Butler at butlergree@aol.com or 225.635.6312
