Pugin, Ramsgate and the Sea
"Only the ignorant despise the dangers of the sea." Pugin's forthright, as ever, statement reveals both his lifelong experience of, and involvement with, matters nautical. The Festival theme, 'Wind and Waves', is one which no-one would have understood better than him. In this talk/walk Catriona Blaker will seek to relate the love and knowledge of the sea to Augustus Pugin's life in general and to the Ramsgate life in particular of this intriguing architect, a leader of the Gothic Revival style.
Catriona Blaker MA has been immersed in the world of Pugin for twenty years. She serves on the Pugin Society committee, and is a founder member of the Society. She is currently closely involved with the Friends of St Augustine Church and is also employed by the Landmark Trust as a tour guide at Pugin's house, The Grange. She has written various articles for the Pugin Society Journal, of which she was for a time editor, and is the author of Edward Pugin and Kent (2nd edition 2012) and co-author, with Robin Fleet, of The Stained Glass of St Augustine's Church, Ramsgate, also 2012. She also wrote and researched The Pugins: a Ramsgate Town Trail.
