An annual festival brings classical music lovers to the wonderful Cornish seaside town of Fowey. The high-profile international stars lined up for 7.30 p.m. on Friday September 16th and 7.30 p.m. on Saturday September 17th 2016 are Australian born guitarist, Craig Ogden and Britains most popular clarinettist, Emma Johnson, MBE.
Craig is heard very regularly on Classic FM. His albums The Guitarist and Summertime shot straight to No. 1 in the classical chart as did both Christmas Time and Craig Ogden and Friends, released in June 2015. He performs concertos with many UK and European orchestras and tours across the globe. He also appears at many major UK festivals, including large outdoor festivals such as Jamie Oliver and Alex James Big Feastival and the Wilderness Festival. He brings to Fowey a programme entitled 'FANTASY TO FLAMENCO', featuring fascinating guitar music from the 17th to 21st centuries. Craig will also talk about them!
Emma Johnson shot to fame as a BBC Young Musician of the Year and has since developed a busy solo career, which takes her to major European, American, Asian and Australasian venues. Her repertoire includes not only all the major clarinet concertos but also pieces written especially for her by John Dankworth, Will Todd and Michael Berkeley, amongst others. Her recent recording of sonatas by Brahms and Mendelssohn was described as definitive . . . triumphant . . . a landmark disc", following on from her chart-topping successes: 'Voyage' and 'The Mozart Album'.
She will be joined by pianist John Lenehan, whose performances and recordings have also met with universal acclaim, in a programme including masterworks by Brahms, Robert AND Clara Schumann, alongside Paul Reades Suite for the TV programme The Victorian Kitchen Garden and jazzy Riffs by Leonard Bernstein.
On Saturday 17th September, at 11.30 a.m., the festival stages a Coffee Concert, featuring the cream of young musical talent from the south west. Dr Marlene Bowden, a popular local pianist, accompanies the award-winning young artists. Tea, coffee, soft drinks will be served from 11am.
All concerts take place in the beautiful Church of St Fimbarrus, near the harbour in the centre of the town.
For FESTIVAL FRIENDS, there will also be a pre-concert talk by Emma Johnson, followed by finger-food and a drink. There are anyway drinks on sale both evenings.
