Akenya and the Joe Policastro Trio play the music of Prince

The Joe Policastro Trio, comprised of bassist, Joe Policastro, guitarist Dave Miller, and drummer Mikel Avery, is a Chicago-based jazz trio. While firmly rooted in jazz, the bands open-minded, inclusive nature also brings rock, old-school funk, soul, brazilian, and free improvisation to the surface while still keeping the aesthetic of an acoustic trio intact. The trio recently released POPS!, an album that celebrates Pops For Champagne, the venue that gave brith to the group, and collects their arrangements of "pop" tunes from the likes of Tom Waits, Prince, Neil Young, The Pixies, Stevie Wonder, and others.

Akenya is a 23-year-old multi-genre singer, pianist, composer, and arranger. Her music places a strong emphasis on jazz and the culmination of hip-hop, funk, pop, classical, world music, and other loves of hers. In the jazz world she has worked with and performed for the likes of Esperanza Spalding, Fred Hersch, Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, Luciana Souza, and Dave Holland. She is also well known in the Chicago hip-hop and soul scenes and has collaborated with Chance the Rapper, Noname Gyspy, Mick Jenkins, Eryn Allen Kane, Donnie Trumpet, and the O'Mys.

In collaboration, Akenya and the Joe Policastro Trio take a career-spanning look at the music of Prince with newly-crafted instrumental and vocal arrangements.
