(UK, 2013) Director: Stephen Daldry. Playwright: Peter Morgan. Cast: Helen Mirren, Edward Fox, Haydn Gwynne, Rufus Wright.
National Theatre Lives encore presentation of The Audience stars the ever-fantastic Helen Mirren reprising her role of Queen Elizabeth II (The Queen), in the play by Peter Morgan originally broadcast live from Londons Gielgud Theatre! While it is known that for 60 years Queen Elizabeth met in private with each of Britains prime ministers, whatever was said in those meetings remains secret. Playwright Peter Morgan imagines a series of pivotal conversations with the likes of Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron, that range from the confessional to the explosive, giving Mirren an opportunity to portray a woman who finds herself changed by events and time itself.
Helen Mirren gives a faultless performance that transcends mere impersonation to endow the monarch with a sense of inner life and a quasi-Shakespearean aura of solitude. Michael Billington, The Guardian UK
