Michelle Brooks-Thompson at TreeCat Cafe
Michelle Brooks-Thompson, season three finalist of The Voice, performs at the youth-run TreeCat Café on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 6:30 pm at the Treehouse Community at Easthampton Meadows, 1 Treehouse Circle Easthampton, Mass. Singer songwriter, Marcia Gomes, and Treehouse community member, Stephanny Marryshow, open the show.
Michelle Brooks-Thompson is a classically trained, indie gospel, recording artist from Springfield, Massachusetts, who has been singing and performing since the age of five. Her tone and vocal power have been compared to that of the late music iconWhitney Houston, and she has been referred to as the Whitney Houston of gospel music. In 2012, Brooks-Thompson received a three-chair turn during her audition on NBCs hit television show, The Voice. She went on to become a finalist on Adam Levines team. Her time on The Voice, helped launch her music career and has given her exposure in both the gospel and secular music industries. In 2015, Brooks-Thompson debuted her gospel single and music video, When I Think.
Brooks-Thompson attended Mount Holyoke College, where she majored in Vocal Performance and Piano. After receiving her Bachelors of Arts degree in Music, she was accepted into Bostons Berklee College of Music as a candidate for the well-known and respected Performance Diploma Program. Brooks-Thompson chose to pursue her next steps in music independently and deferred her acceptance to Berklee.
Between the ages of 13 and 25, Brooks, Thompson served as the minister of music at her grandfathers church, Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ (GOGIC), and later for New Covenant COGIC. Brooks-Thompson has founded and directed community and educational gospel choirs and continues to minister all over the country at various churches and on Christian broadcasting networks, including TBN and the Word Network. She is the CEO of MBT Music Ministries.
Before launching her solo career, Brooks-Thompson performed with various gospel recording artists from around the country. In addition to singing backup for gospel artists, she has opened shows for both contemporary Christian & gospel artists. Some of these nationally known recording artists include Pastor Donnie McClurkin (Church Without Walls), James Fortune & FIYA, Doobie Powell, Bebo Norman, Eric Taylor and more.
Marcia Gomes, a jazz, R&B, Latin and gospel influenced singer song writer, opens for Brooks-Thompson. Gomes is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in voice and songwriting and is a Cleo Laine vocal scholar. Gomes performed with a number of popular jazz and R&B bands in Boston and has appeared onstage at Ryles, Club Passim, Club 1369, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Augusta Savage Gallery at UMass Amherst, and the Arts Block in Greenfield among other venues. Gomes relocated to the Valley in 2012 and has been developing an enthusiastic local following.
Ken Maiuri of the Daily Hampshire Gazette writes, Gomes calls to mind such 70s greats as Joni Mitchell, Phoebe Snow and Stevie Wonder. Well-known New Orleans jazz vocalist, Samirah Evans, who now lives in Brattleboro, VT, shares, Marcia's voice soars with effortless grace, with a lovely tonal quality that is breathtaking. Evelyn Harris, Grammy Award-winning vocalist, proclaims, Her talent and musicianship shone through her compositions and her use of interesting chord structuresshe has made me one of her biggest fans and I feel honored to have her in our community. Gomes performs at numerous venues in the area, and has appeared at the other venues.
The TreeCat Café is a monthly cafe and performance venue run by youth of the Treehouse Community, a unique inter-generational community designed to support families who are fostering and adopting children from the foster care system. The TreeCat Café provides high school and college-aged youth at Treehouse with work experience and training in business skills. Youth take on and manage every aspect of the Café: marketing, accounting, fundraising, cooking and hosting. Local business owners and elders of the Treehouse Community offer their expertise and mentor youth in entrepreneurial skills.
Admission is $20 for general public and $5 for Treehouse community members. Proceeds will help to fund the TreeCat Café and other youth programs at Treehouse. Food will be served.
