Kitka Presents: Balkan Music Workshop for Youth with Corinne Sykes
A weekend mini-course in Balkan and East European folk singing and dancing for youth aged 12-18 years. Students will learn foundational vocal technique for healthy chest-voice singing, supportive breathing, and vocal expression in a polyphonic tradition. Students will also learn accompanying dances, and emphasis will be placed on the strong connection between music and dance, and their role in strengthening community. Topics of harmony, rhythm, text/language, dance and vocal style will all be addressed. No experience necessary; young singers and dancers of all levels are welcome. Both workshops will take place from 4-6 PM.
Corinne Sykes has been a member of Kitka since 2010. She has studied the music of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus with folk song masters both domestically and abroad, touring to countries including Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, and Armenia. Corinne also studied music and voice at Yale University, during which time she performed with the Yale Women's Slavic Chorus (director 2008-2009). Corinne has been leading vocal workshops in schools and communities since 2006.
