Lauren Crux // Show: My Lunch with Sophia Loren & Other Stories
Acclaimed solo performer Lauren Crux serves up the unexpected with stealth, wit and artful seduction. Her intimate, alive stories filled with tenderness as well as subversive irreverence, allow us laughter and amazement, curiosity and self-reflection.
Crux unpacks life as a womanmake that a smart, ferocious, ironically hopeful, lesbian with sense of humor intact. While dining with Sophia Loren, she explores themes of sexuality and desire, the wonders of life's appetites and the longing for reciprocity in friendship. As an artist traveling to Ireland, she takes us on a journey to the center of one's soul, complete with red faeries, doubt and dead fish. And then there is the little problem of "edge" . . .
Crux's stories end with the audience recognizing and reconnecting with the things in themselves and the world that matter. She offers us "beauty with inner implications."
Lauren Crux is known primarily for her solo performance monologues as well as community based collaborative art projects. She earned her MFA from UC Irvine in interdisciplinary studio arts. Her work is influenced
by the Japanese concept of "Shibui," which although hard to translate means more or less, "restrained elegance," and her favorite"beauty with inner implications."
"Lauren takes us on a smart, generous beauty of mind and language that led us deeper and deeper toward the mysteries that lie beneath things we normally give only casual attention . . . " Sarah Albertson, from a review of Starting from the Wrong Place
"In a gripping display of solo acting skill, Crux creates elaborate narratives that are pithy, provocative, sexy . . ." The Good Times
"Crux skillfully blends monologue with visual, poetic, and sculptural elements, taking the audience through an unexpected seduction." Reynolds Gallery Newsletter, University of the Pacific "
[Crux's work] is layered and rich . . . Her stories . . . always manage to turn the most ordinary things into the extraordinary." The Daily Campus

"By turns comic, touching, sensitive, brilliant . . . I was swept up in so many ways."
