Endangered Species Day Film Showing and Panel Discussion
Racing Extinction, 2015 Sundance Film Festival Official Selection. In Racing Extinction, a team of artists and activists exposes the hidden world of extinction with never-before-seen images that will change the way we see the planet. Two worlds drive extinction across the globe, potentially resulting in the loss of half of all species. The international wildlife trade creates bogus markets at the expense of creatures that have survived on this planet for millions of years. And the other surrounds us, hiding in plain sight  a world that the oil and gas companies dont want the rest of us to see. Using covert tactics and state-of-the-art technology, the Racing Extinction team exposes these two worlds in an inspiring affirmation to preserve life as we know it. From the Academy Award Winning Filmmakers of "The Cove" There will be a short discussion after the film about what can be done locally to protect species in the Great Lakes and awards for those working so hard to protect the Endangered Species Act in the Great Lakes.

Panelists
a. Dr. Adrian Treves, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies, Carnivore Coexistence Lab
Adrian earned his B.A. in 1990 in Biology and Anthropology from Rice University and his PhD in 1997 in Behavioral Ecology and Biological Anthropology from Harvard University. In 2007, he founded the Carnivore Coexistence Lab at the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Adrian's research focuses on how to balance human needs with wildlife conservation. To study this question, he explores people's conflicts with large carnivores, particularly livestock predation in the USA and abroad. This line of inquiry includes livestock husbandry, wildlife management, human and carnivore behavior, and methods for mitigating human-carnivore conflicts. Adrian and his students conduct fieldwork in Wisconsin (wolves and other large carnivores) with a variety of collaborators. Click here for links to his recent research articles on carnivores, compensation, hunting, mitigating human-wildlife conflicts, and co-management.

b. Dr. Richard Beilfuss, Ph.D., is President and CEO of the International Crane Foundation (ICF).

Rich first joined ICF in 1988, conducting his graduate research on the restoration of important crane sites in Vietnam and Mozambique. From 1992-2005 he developed and directed the ICF Africa Program, spearheading long-term efforts to restore the water-stressed Zambezi River Basin for people and wildlife, and contributing to wetland conservation efforts and capacity building in more than a dozen African countries. From 2005-2009, Rich lived with his family in Mozambique, where he served as Director of Scientific Services for Gorongosa National Park. He speaks Portuguese and Nepali.

Rich is a leader in the emerging field of environmental flows, which focuses on managing water flows to sustain rivers, wetlands, and the human livelihoods and well-being that depend on these ecosystems. He serves as a Senior Advisor to the World Wildlife Fund and an Affiliate of the Natural Heritage Institute on water issues, and is an Adjunct Professor for the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering and for the University of Eduardo Mondlane in Mozambique, where he teaches courses and supervises students.

Rich lives with his wife Katie, and their two sons, in Madison. He is an avid runner, wetland-stomper, and dart-thrower, but not all at the same time.

c.  Michael Vickerman , Program & Policy Director RENEW
Michael in his own words: I was hired by RENEW back in 1991 to manage an intervention before the Public Service Commission, and I feel privileged to have worked for the organization ever since. It has truly been a fantastic learning experience. In my 23 years with RENEW, the renewable energy arena has blossomed from an idealistic endeavor on the margins to a mainstream business activity. Renewable energy is no longer an alternative any more, but the real deal, and an agricultural and a manufacturing state like Wisconsin should embrace it with open arms. I am a long-time Wisconsinite, starting at age seven when my family moved to Milwaukee. A graduate of UW-Madison in 1978, I live in Madison with my wife Pamela. Now that our son is grown and living in Chicago, we spend many days circulating around town on our bicycles and venturing into the Dane County countryside. We also make extensive use of the sunlight radiating on our East Side residence to grow vegetables and rry clothes outside, as well as heat the water and power the household inside.

d..  Jeff Halter, Deputy Zoo Director, Henry Vilas Zoo. Preservation of the Species on Earth

Our mission at the Henry Vilas Zoo is to conserve and protect the wonders of the living natural world and to help build understanding between people and animals by promoting conservation and providing a high quality recreational and educational experience to our visitors.

e.  Sara Andrews, Executive Director since April 2016, Farmed Animals Co-Committee Head since May 2016

Sara Andrews is a Wisconsin native, and has been a vocal advocate for animals for most of her life, and has many ties to the animal rights community statewide. Sara has been an Alliance volunteer for over seven years and had been the acting Director of Operations for the Alliance since early December of 2015.

Although she has a lot of hobbies (a variety of crafting, outdoor activities, a strong passion for social justice, and a general interest in everything) her primary interest is the well being of the non-human animals which share our planet and the kind of world we create for ourselves and leave behind for those who come after. She initially became interested in plant-based eating after learning how much more resource efficient and environmentally friendly a diet based on plants is than a diet that is based on animal-sourced foods. This led to more information seeking which grew into a realization of how our individual choices effect non-human animals and people alike and caused a shift in her behavior and thinking. She hopes the Alliance's work will help others make the same connections!

f. Melissa Tedrowe, Wisconsin State Director, The Humane Society of the United States

Melissa has been active in the animal protection movement for over two decades, working on campaigns that crack down on puppy mills, protect farm animals, end the poaching and thrill killing of wild animals, reduce the suffering of animals in laboratories, and more.   Shes served as the president of the Alliance for Animals and the Environment, Wisconsins largest grassroots animal protection organization, and was a founding member of the Four Lakes Wildlife Center in Dane County.  In her current role shes been working to pass a bill that will restrict the private possession of dangerous wild animals in Wisconsin, and collaborating with horse advocates to launch a statewide network that aims to prevent equine abuse and neglect.   Another of her priorities is partnering with law enforcement to identify, prosecute, and ultimately reduce animal cruelty.  An academic before coming to The HSUS, Melissa holds a doctorate in persuasive writing and communication; her research and teaching often explored what it means to speak for those who cannot.  She draws on that background frequently to advance the goals of animal protection in the Badger state.
