The program runs just under 90 minutes and includes a brief intermission.

Cellist Michal Palzewicz and pianist Chiharu Sai join their musical forces together to create an exciting duo. They both attended Manhattan School of Music after completing their music conservatory training in their countries (Michal in Poland and Chiharu in Japan), moved from New York City to the West Coast, and joined the music faculty at SOU in recent years. A vibrant and dynamic duo, they are passionate about exploring the great repertoire written for cello and piano and excited about sharing them with audiences around the world.

Michal Palzewicz has performed extensively throughout the United States and Europe, both as a soloist and ensemble player. He has performed to great acclaim at prestigious venues such as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in NYC and Wigmore Hall in England. Michal was the founding member of the Elsner String Quartet, which earned him the Saunderson Award at the 52nd Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition and was the winner of the Young Concert Artists Auditions in Leipzig. Michal attended Warsaw Conservatory of Music in Poland and then The Manhattan School of Music where his quartet received full scholarships as well as artist-in-residence status. His teachers and mentors include the members of the Amadeus String Quartet, David Soyer, Michael Tree, Hugh Maguire, Robert Mann, Pinchas Zuckerman, and Isidore Cohen.

Michal has performed as a soloist with several orchestras including the Juneau Symphony Orchestra and the Rogue Valley Symphony Orchestra, where he is currently the principal cellist. He has also performed in numerous productions at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Michal was thrilled to participate in Mary Zimmerman's production of The White Snake which originated at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival went on to tour the U.S. as well as China.

Michal performs classical cello-piano repertoire with pianists Chiharu Sai, Alexander Tutunov and Martin Majkut. In addition to the cello, Michal also plays viola da gamba, violin and electric cello in collaboration with percussionist Jason "Cedar" Miller.

Selected by Japans major newspaper, Mainichi Shinbun, as One of the 100 People in Tokyo to Represent the 21st Century, pianist Chiharu Sai (Ji Choon Choi) performs widely as a soloist and chamber musician, both in Japan and the United States.

Her performances have met wide acclaim for their great verve and refreshing power (Chopin Magazine). Dr. Sais performance highlights include four concerts in 2002-2010 at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City including two solo recitals, one chamber music concert with New York Amadeus String Quartet, and one concerto performance with the Carolina Philharmonic conducted by David Michael Wolff.

The renowned critic Harris Goldsmith said of Dr. Sais performance of Mozarts piano concertos, Ms. Sai proved herself to be a Mozartean of refreshingly unusual potency. She is one of those rarities: an artist who is unafraid to explore the white-hot passion of the Salzburg genius. Upon hearing Dr. Sais performance at Opera City Hall in Tokyo, the music critic Yukiko Hagiya wrote, This critic wishes that she would cross the Pacific Ocean more often to enthrall the classical music fans of Japan.

Chiharu Sai balances her performance schedule with an active involvement in music education and pedagogy. Since she moved to Mount Shasta from New York City in 2013, she has been teaching both at College of the Siskiyous and Southern Oregon University. Dr. Sai balances her performance schedule with an active involvement in music education and pedagogy. During the summer, she serves on the faculty at Pacific Crest Chamber Music Festival (www.pacificcrestmusic.com) and tours with Pacific Crest Chamber Players during the year. She also collaborates with Michal Palzewicz as Duo Sapphire in exploring the music written for cello and piano.

Chiharu Sai holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the Manhattan School of Music. Her doctoral dissertation entitled The Proportional Function of the Cadenza in the First Movements of Mozarts Piano Concertos was published by Lambert in Germany. Her debut CD of Chopins 4 Scherzi and 4 Ballades was released on King Records of Japan in the fall of 2008. Of this disc, the critic Yoshiko Ikuma noted Ms. Sais deep identification with their celebrated creators genius.
