John L. Bell on Spirituality and Music
John L. Bell, a member of the Wild Goose Resource Group of the Iona Community will give a lecture on "Ancient Celtic Gifts for Contemporary People" on Friday,October 12, 2012 at 7 pm at University Congregational United Church of Christ.  A Celtic Church flourished in Ireland and Scotland between the 6th and 9th centuries.  Its missionaries helped to re-evangelize Europe and its spirituality has percolated to the present day through the songs, prayers and poetry of people who have been nourished by the witness of these ancient sages. The way we read and regard Holy Scripture, care of the world's ecology and the imaginative exercise of personal devotions are all issues which benefit in today's world from insights long forgotten but now surprisingly relevant.

On Saturday, October 13, John Bell will lead a seminar on "Why Do God's People Sing?" from 10 am to 3 pm at University Congregational United Church of Christ.  In this seminar, using new and old songs from home and abroad, we identify a range of reasons which explain why song has had and always should have a priority in congregational worship.  The seminar is NOT exclusively for those who can read music.  Most of the world gets on marvelously singing in harmony without a note of music in front of them.

John L. Bell lectures, preaches and conducts seminars in Europe, North American, Australia and Southern Africa.  He is a hymn writer, author and occasional broadcaster on national radio and television, whose primary passion is for congregational song.
