The Brazilian Cultural Center of Chicago and the International House Global Voices Program invite you to celebrate the 50-Year Anniversary of the Afro-Samba rhythms and to honor two of the greatest masters of Brazilian music, Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powell. The concert titled Afro-Samba Jazz: The Music of the African Diaspora is a project envisioned by the Brazilian Cultural Center of Chicago with the purpose to link the various rhythms of the music of the diaspora and the Jazz influence.
This performance brings together talented Brazilian and American musicians dedicated to the preservation of Brazilian music at its best. Dill Costa (vocal), Luciano Antonio (guitar/vocal), Heitor Garcia (drums/percussion), Jack Zara (bass), Marcin Fahmy (piano), and guest Pharez Whitted (trumpet), perform songs from one of the greatest albums ever produced by Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powell. The programs feature classics songs such as Berimbau, Samba da Benção, Canto de Ossanha, and Prá Que Chorar, which has roots in the sacred songs of Candomblé, the Afro-Brazilian religion.
Also, as part of the concert, Lewis Achenbach, Founder of Jazz Occurrence, will do a live paint of the concert. In describing Jazz Occurrence, Lewis points out that It started with documenting live music through an imaginative process, but it has become much more. It now feels like a translation or an amalgam of two languages. A Jazz Occurrence is a meeting place; a tertulia of like minds. We have a dialogue about our future by using the tools of our past. This is an artistic movement. The artists from opposite banks are meeting in the rush of mid-river.
