WHAT IF? A NIGHT OF EXPERIMENTAL, IMPROVISED MUSIC CURATED BY BIG CATS
FEATURING BIG CATS, ANDREW BRODER, ERIC MAYSON, CLAIRE DE LUNE.

BIG CATS:

Spencer Wirth-Davis (AKA Big Cats) is a producer, DJ, composer, and musician from Minneapolis, MN. He has released several full-length albums, including Pangaea, a collaborative effort with Toki Wright. Okayplayer named the duo the best, most important hip hop act Minnesota has to offer. His previous album, For My Mother, was named a top 5 Minnesota album of 2012 by Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, City Pages, and Vita.mn. In 2015, he released The Polar Bear Rug with Homeless. City Pages named the album amongst the best Minnesota albums of 2015. He also co-produced Eric Maysons debut album, Detail, prompting the Star Tribune and First Avenue to name Mayson as one of the best new acts of 2015.

His new album, What If It Doesn't Get Better?, was released digitally and on vinyl on March 25th, 2016. According to Wirth-Davis, Its a weird record. Its more experimental and ambient than anything Ive made previously. Theres no rapping on it. Eric Mayson, Lydia Liza, Gen Devine, Nelson Devereaux, and Claire de Lune helped me make it. A few of the songs are about astral projection, being in multiple places at once, time travel, remote viewing, ufos, conspiracy theories, space travel. One of the songs is about the moon possibly being a giant spaceship. Most of the tracks started with me, a piano, and a tape recorder. Id just let the tape run and play and sing for a while. I then pulled samples from that tape. I recorded all of the primary material for this record on the same cassette tape. Ive been blurring the line between my producing, songwriting, and DJing lately, and the way these songs are written and arranged definitely reflects that.

ANDREW BRODER:

Born and raised in Minneapolis MN, Andrew Broder has dedicated the better part of his thirty-plus years to carving out his own singular path in music. Andrew has spent time as a cutting and scratching hip-hop battle DJ, a snotty punk rocker, a challenging and thoughtful improviser, soundtrack composer, working sideman, producer, remixer, beat-maker, poet, brutal noise-monger and above all a fearless, restless and provocative songwriter.

His work is a study in surprise and defying expectation. With his records as Fog, he re-defined the turntable as a compositional tool, and his contributions since to avant hip-hop, electronic music, rock, jazz and metal have been equally engaging, and envelope-pushing. His lyrics are cutting and evocative, his melodies poignant and tart, and his curiosity leads him to unexpected juxtapositions in sound and image. In whatever genre or medium he works, he strives to take the listener somewhere they have never been, or make them more keenly aware of somewhere they already are.

ERIC MAYSON:

Eric Mayson was born in Corpus Christie Texas to a musical father and mother who worked in museums.  He and his family moved around the US until finally putting down roots in Minneapolis when he was 16.  He starting playing piano when he was a toddler, eventually picking up the cello, guitar, and bass.  He has worked as an actor, a director, composed and music directed several musicals, and regularly makes music with twin cities dance artists.  In 2009 his house in Mankato burned down, so he moved to Minneapolis and started working with Crunchy Kids, where he found a love for producing and playing hip-hop.  Since then he has worked with Big Cats, Toki Wright, Doomtree, and Lizzo, among others.  Also a member of Caroline Smiths band, Mayson has solidified his place as a valuable collaborator in the twin cities music scene.  In 2015 with the help of RiverRock Music Group, he released Detail, his first solo record.  A 40 minute cassette tape spanning/inventing many genres with only one track break.

CLAIRE DE LUNE:

Claire de Lune grew up in New York City, and the dark, knowing energy and old soul of its streets has found its way into all of the musical ventures shes been a part of.  An accomplished singer/songwriter, de Lune has experimented in many musical genres, from acoustic beginnings early in her career, to hip-hop as a member of all-female hip hop collective (and winner of City Pages' "Picked to Click" poll of best new bands poll in 2012 and Star Tribune's Best New Band to see in 2013 ) The Chalice, to her current role as front-woman for quickly ascending indie dream-pop project tiny deaths.  A recent fixture in the experimental improvisation scene, de Lune was awarded the title of "Best Female Vocalist" in the 2015 Best of the Twin Cities issue of City Pages.
