The Cosmic Sounds of Indian Dhrupad: The Gundecha Brothers
The world-famous Gundecha Brothers will present a rare treat for lovers of Indian classical music on Sunday, May 1st, at 5 pm at the University of Maryland Auditorium at Shady Grove, Building 1, 9640 Gudelsky Drive, Rockville, MD 20850. All tickets are $25, available online at brownpapertickets.com, and at the door on the day of the concert.
The Gundecha Brothers, vocalists Umakant and Ramakant and percussionist Akhilesh, are today the most active performers, both in India and abroad, of the ancient Indian musical style known as Dhrupad, revered for its deep meditative and spiritual qualities. The Brothers perform regularly in all major music festivals throughout India, and have made numerous international tours, visiting more than 25 countries. They have also recorded more than three dozen CDs' on various Indian and international labels, and are frequent performers on Indian radio and television. They were awarded the high civilian honor of Padmashri by the Indian government in 2012.
Proceeds from the concert, sponsored by the Washington-based Dhrupad Music institute of America (dhrupad.com), will support the propagation of Dhrupad music within the U.S., as well as the activities of the Dhrupad Sansthan in Bhopal, India, which is the world's leading residential academy for the teaching of Dhrupad, to students from across India and all over the world.
Doors will open at 4:30 pm.
