Open Source // Show: Flesh
It's last call at the local bar, but the lone bartender is having a difficult time getting his most annoying customer to leave. This turns out to be the least of his troubles, however, because news starts pouring in concerning a bizarre pandemic of flesh-eating bacteria. The unlikely duo must decide if they should stay locked in the bar or face the mobs outside. An oddly malevolent CDC worker only complicates matters (and isn't shy about smashing anyone's face into the bar). She reveals that there are problems much more pressing than the disease; the universe might be collapsing on itself. This new play by Oakland-based playwright Barry Eitel explores fear, guilt, and the nature of truth with a flair for the eerie and wacky. Directed by Eileen Tull with a cast of Santa Cruz and Bay Area actors, Flesh is staged in an actual bar where the audience is encouraged to eat and drink before, during, and after the performance. Just be sure to wash your hands to avoid infection. If, after the show, you notice a small burning pain and large patches of rotting skin and muscle, call your health care provider immediately.
