Klever Quartet and Flying Balalaika Brothers meet in Austin
Klever Quartet was founded in 2013 by the group of young musicians, individually winners of many competitions, showing to the public all the brilliance of their personalities.
In its still short existence, the Klever Quartet had to be noted in more than 50 cities in Russia and abroad, gathering full concert halls and excellent reviews.
One of the unique features of the ensemble that the group has been working closely with a wonderful young composer and pianist, People's Artist of the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria Murat Kabardokov.
The result of their collaboration was the first CD "Without Words" for string quartet and piano that consists of original music of Murat, composed in styles of cinematic music and classical crossover. The presentation of the album was successfully held in the Small St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall and the Moscow International House of Music.
This truly international ensemble consisting of an Ossetian, Russian / Polish, Belarusian, Georgian and Circassian who play together with love and passion without nationalistic or religious borders.
This year the group decided to participate several chamber music competitions.
As a part of their preparation for the competitions in April of 2016 Klever Quartet is invited to the USA to be part of the Leopold Auer Society project "Music for World Peace"
The self-described "Russian Psycho-Gypsy Rock" band blends modern-day and traditional sounds to create a futuristic fusion of experimental world music. Armed with electric guitars, an accordion, a metal-influenced drummer, the Flying Balalaika Brothers performances center around the band's namesakea massive Wale-balalaika. Seamlessly moving from slower traditional Russian folk songs to guitar and drum-driven punk rock, the group's high-energy shows feel more like a block party than a performance. "Our shows are extremely interactive," says Flying Balalaika Brothers Founder Zhenya Kolykhanov (Z.Rock). "Our concerts illuminate the passion, excitement and sorrow for which the Gypsy music is famous for. Once audience's old and new experience the music, they begin to appreciate its power and emotion," bassist Aaryn Russell adds. The bandconsisting of Zhenya Rock (vocal, balalaika, guitar, accordion), Sergey Vashchenko (balalaika, accordion, bass), along with Aaryn Russell (bass, guitar) and Chris Hausler (drums)draws inspiration from a plethora of performers including Django Reinhardt, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and even Tom Waits. The punk-steeped, folk-rock fused band formed almost twenty years ago and has been performing their over-the-top act for audiences across the country ever since. In their time as a band, the Flying Balalaika Brothers have been featured at festivals, on television and in movies. The Flying Balalaika Brothers represent a near perfect example of cross - cultural communication and assimilation, thereby demonstrating unto the world the true potential and beauty of multi-cultural cooperation and harmony. There are blue sin blue grass and blue grass in blues and a Russian polka is just heartbeat away from a Country two beat which is only an exhilarating breath away from a Tejano Polka. The Latin cumbia's combine nicely with the smooth bossa novas which are then catapulted into sweet swinging jazz standards. A large order of gumboils then served up as musicians stretches they accordions and then watch out when he takes out a Gretch guitar for red-hot rock-a-Billy and excitable rock and roll and jump blues that follow. The Flying Balalaika Brothers are appealing to audiences of all ages. Children enjoy the infectious beat,teenagers scratch their heads in wonder of the new wave of music they are experiencing, and adults seem captivated by the nuance and sophistication of the music. Those with experience with Russian and/or Gypsy music are dual enthralled by its authenticity and taken by its touch of Americana. This is the beauty of the Flying Balalaika Brothers, in two words, Authenticity and Assimilation. This morphing of cultures, whether Russian, Serbian, Hebrew, Gypsy, Hispanic, South or North American is a definite breaker of barriers.
