THE LOST ARCADE presented by Cult Classics & Zia Records
At Cult Classics, we believe in not just cult film, but the culture of niche and cult events. We're curating a new event on Friday April 15th, 2016 to spotlight our commitment to diversity in film. This is the Arizona premiere of THE LOST ARCADE, a documentary about NYC's Chinatown Fair, the last traditional video game left in New York City.
The Lost Arcade is the story of Chinatown Fair, the legendary arcade located in the heart of New Yorks Chinatown. The documentary explores how the arcade became a shelter to a community as diverse as the city surrounding it and changed lives in doing so.
The Lost Arcade, a documentary about the closing of Manhattans last video game arcade, could easily fall into the trap of nostalgic cool. Theres a fashion to that former scene and those past decades that rings true with todays hegemony of hip. After all, the lost arcade is discussed in darkened rooms, on dark sidewalks, within dim and lonely studios. Arcades are campy, obsessive, loud, colorful, and removed from the mainstream.
But the arcade is ultimately a human experience, a fact beautifully captured by the documentarians Kurt Vincent and Irene Chin. Rather than try to appreciate or dissect the nostalgia, they reveal the heart of it. They find the unique stories within the greater trend of arcade games, and the long, joyful life of an arcade called the Chinatown Fair. The Pakistani owner first envisioned the arcade in a dream. A homeless, parentless boy discovered heaven in Chinatown. The lives and stories and dreams intersect with a beautiful cinematic lucidity. The films stranger-than-fiction characters reveal the arcade to be a powerful social interaction, and in portraying these enthusiasts we see the purest colorings of an authentic joy.
Its rare to see humanity captured in flashing screens ignited by quarters. You may feel compelled to search for quarters and the closest machine once the credits roll.
We'll be screening this film at The Grid in Mesa, a barcade so you can play some games and live the arcade experience after you see the film. As always, we'll have giveaways and a cool poster print to commemorate the screening.
Tickets are $7! This includes free play arcade games. 21 and over. Get a limited edition art print with your ticket for only $17!
