Tuesday May 31 - A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin 1-2:30 p.m.
Join us for a special series that will leave you reading in a richer, more fulfilling way.
Surely you recall high-school English concepts such as symbolism or foreshadowing, characterization or dramatic irony. Maybe you even note these occasionally as you read.
But wouldn't it be excellent to indulge yourself in a passionate and entertaining look at how these concepts manifest themselves in certain novels so you can apply them to whatever is sitting on your nightstand today? And wouldn't it be satisfying to understand how they truly do inform the way we read?
Kimberly Ford, best-selling author, Ph.D. and former adjunct professor at Berkeley is eager to explore these concepts and many more. Combining insightful lecture with lively discussion, she will help readers delve into novels that promise to be compelling and enlightening.
The 2016 Spring Series explores narrative voice and individualism in J.D. Salinger's Franny and Zooey, Muriel Spark's The Prime of Miss Jean Brody and A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin.
Who among us could resist an in-depth rereading of Salinger's slim but astonishingly innovative second novel? Muriel Sparks darkly hilarious classic will broaden and focus the series. And this spring will close with Lucia Berlins critically acclaimed short story collection, the one that reads like a page-turning novel and that will especially appeal to Bay Area readers.
Come for one meeting or indulge in a slightly richer experience (and save a little money) by signing up for all three. Books are included in the price of the seminars and should be picked up at Kepler's (and read) prior to the meeting date.
We know you love books. Join Kimberly to invest a few hours in learning how to read them more fully while having a seriously good time.
