Flex Dance Company // Show: To Have Loved
Flex Dance Company will be premiering new work alongside favorites from their repertory to create an evening of dance that will not soon be forgotten. 'To Have Loved' delves into the challenges and joys one attributes to their individuality within a group - dissecting, rearranging, discovering new relationships and accepting that connections may evolve or fade. This work neither defines nor strays from giving meaning to such dilemmas, instead, Johnson allows for a seamless structuring of one perspective to the next, taking the audience along with her in this bold take on the human experience.
What started as a small dance collective out of Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA is now an aspiring young dance company of 10 eclectic dancers. FLEX is known for high-octane athletic performance, using contemporary choreography that is endlessly inventive. FLEX Dance Company, directed by Leslie Johnson, is described as an "all- out, high energy, rock the rafters tour-de-force". Julia Chiapella writes, "The 10 members that comprise FLEX rise to the challenge, flipping, leaping, rolling, and tossing one another into each others arms. To watch FLEX in action is to engage in head-shaking, breathtaking astonishment: it's hard to believe what these dancers can do."
The dance company, known for Johnson's unique contemporary style, has performed for the Grand Opening of The Crocker Theater in Aptos, CA, Motion at the Mill and The 418 Project in Santa Cruz, UNIFY at The Montgomery Theater in San Jose as well as at DAMSF in San Francisco to name a few. "I have had the great experience of witnessing Leslie Johnson's stellar tour-de-force company, FLEX. She pushes, prods, and strokes the imagination, all the while leading us down her tantalizing path towards exhilaration and raw beauty. I'm excited to see where time and creative indulgence lead her...the path is ascending."- Cat Willis, Executive Director, Tannery World Dance and Cultural Center.
