Per Haaland/ Show: BUT I WILL STAY
Men! Feelings! Psychological Theory! Don't miss Santa Cruz dance theatre stalwart (Dancers Anonymous, Perfectly Realized Human Being) Per Haaland's latest guided tour to our psyche's inner landscape. In "But I Will Stay" we follow a distressed but dedicated meditator confronting unruly feelings and repressed sub-personalities as he reaches for inner peace without sacrificing emotional authenticity. This group-devised work is based on psychologist Silvan Tomkins' ground-breaking affect theory which articulates how pre-inscribed feeling states such as excitement, joy, anger, fear, anguish and shame profoundly shape human experience. Per is joined by multi-talented local performers RD Bolam, Kirk Glaser, Kevin Herring and Lalu Simcik in this quirky blend of movement theatre, spoken word, dance and original song. Presented with two other pieces: "Calvinist Communion", an offbeat modern duet set to Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto during which a couple (Santa Cruz dancers Ian Crowell and Callie Daniel) perform strange kitchen table rituals in their underwear; and "Poet for Sale", (performed by Per Haaland), where a deranged yet charming poet offers himself to the public.
