We depend absolutely on plants for food, many medicines, building materials, ecological services, absorption of pollutions, regulating global warming and climate generally in countless ways.  We know very little about the role that uncommon ones play in the structure of communities.  We do know, above all in the Pacific Northwest, that plants illuminate our lives with their beauty, provide an inspiration for our art, and help to make our days wonderful.  More than two centuries into the Industrial Revolution, however, the explosive growth of the human population, the even more rapid growth of our desire for consumption, and the inequities that are so obvious throughout the world are driving many plants to extinction before they are even discovered.  How can we achieve the kind of global sustainability that will allow us and our descendants to appreciate plants fully in the context of a civilized world for decades to come?  Perhaps they will help to show us the way and inspire us to take the necessary actions to save ourselves.

Dr. Peter Raven is among the worlds most renown botanists and evolutionary biologists.  He is possibly best known for his work Butterflies and Plants: A Study in Coevolution however his pursuits during a lifetime devoted to the natural sciences, the need for biodiversity and conservation has taken him down many academic paths.  His widely used college textbook, Biology of Plants, is in its 8th edition.

One of the most celebrated scientists of our time, Dr. Raven has received countless awards from academic societies and universities around the globe. In 2000, President Bill Clinton presented him with the U.S. National Medal of Science.  In that same year, the American Society of Plant Taxonomists established the Peter Raven Award in his honor to be conferred to authors with outstanding contributions to plant taxonomy and for exceptional efforts at outreach to non-scientists

It is Raven's ability to educate and inspire non-academicians within the realm of the majesty of the plant kingdom that has made him one of the most sought after public speakers of our day.

The lecture will benefit the restoration of Heronswood Garden in Kingston, WA.  The garden is owned and operated by the Port Gamble S"Klallam Tribe and managed by the Port Gamble S'Klallam Foundation.
