Preserving a Historic Icon: The Queen Mary and the Restoration of Her Theater
(Note:  AIA LBSB Members - use your AIA ID# as discount code when making payment.)

Description:
The Queen Mary's creation and launch was nothing if not extraordinary and her story is rich with history, elegance and grandeur. From the time her construction began in 1930 in Clydebank, Scotland, the Queen Mary was destined to stand in a class all her own.  One thousand and one transatlantic crossings since 1934, the Queen Mary retired in Long Beach, arriving on Dec. 9, 1967.  It was the end of one career and the beginning of another.  The Queen Mary lives on now as a full-service Long Beach hotel, historical landmark and entertainment venue, giving visitors a unique glimpse into a bygone era when steamships were the most regal way to travel.

Participants will tour the 4-D theater attraction on ship and hear from the Director of Attractions, the contractor, and the architect, about the history of the ship and how the 4-D attraction was initiated and planned, and an overview of the design ideas.  Participants are welcome to remain in the theater to see a 4-D movie.

Objectives:
1.  Participants will learn the history of the ship, its design and construction.

2.  Participants will come to understand the complex design in refurbishing a site listed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation Historic Hotels, while incorporating 21st century firefighting and egress standards.

3.  Participants learn about renovating an existing theater space into a special F/X driven cinematic attraction to provide a 4D Experience.

4.  Participants will learn how the architect ensured the Art Deco detailing of the ship remained intact.

Appetizers ~ hosted by AIA LBSB ~ in THE OBSERVATION BAR & ART DECO LOUNGE immediately following the tour and 4-D movie!  Full bar available.
