Synopsis: Isabel, Yusef and Xiomara work at a knock-off version of Kinko's in Harlem. Promotions are rare. Raises are rarer. But when Yusef is given the chance to work his way up by spying on his co-workers, friendships are tested and loyalty turns out to be less valuable than cold hard cash in this searing new play about disadvantaged people colliding in a profit-hungry society.
ABOUT James Anthony (Playwright): James is an award-winning playwright who holds a MFA in Film from Howard University and a MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University where his concentration was Playwriting. His work has been presented by OBIE Award-winning playwright Israel Horovitz at The Cherry Lane Theatre (Hand Held Out), The Sixth Annual Fire This Time Festival (Dolphins and Sharks), and the 4th Annual Beer-Battered New Play Festival (Loveeeeeee Play). His play Some Old Black Man starring Arthur French was presented at LaMaMa Theatre as part of the Shadow Festival and it was selected for the Berkshire Playwrights Lab featuring Tony Award-winning actor Roger Robinson. His play The Drop Off was featured as part of The Classical Theatre of Harlem's Playwrights Playground and their Future Classics Series. You're Sitting in the Dark and hop tha A have been recent semi-finalists for the O'Neill Playwrights Conference and Dolphins and Sharks was a semi-finalist for ArtsCenter Stage's 10 By 10 Triangle Festival. James is one of the first recipients of the 2015 First Round Fellowship presented by Open Bar Theatricals to expand Dolphins and Sharks from a ten-minute play to a full-length play. His honors include being selected by the OBIE Award-winning 48 Hours in Harlem Festival as one of their 2015 Playwrights, the Paul Robeson Award, and a John Golden Award for Excellence in Playwriting from NYU. He is a proud member of Harlem's Emerging Black Playwrights Group and a 2014-2015 Dramatists Guild Fellow where he developed new work under award-winning playwrights Andrea Lepcio and Diana Son. Tanya Barfield is currently mentoring him, and he was a playwriting intern on Tracey Scott Wilson's newest play Buzzer, which was presented, at The Public Theatre directed by Anne Kaufman. Recently he was awarded The Playwrights Center's Many Voices Fellowship, and accepted to the 2016 Ars Nova Play Group and The Juilliard School's Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program where he will train under the guidance of Tony Award winning playwrights Marsha Norman and Christopher Durang.
ABOUT Blackboard: Blackboard Reading Series is devoted to Black playwrights throughout the African Diaspora. The series has been incubated by nancy manocherian's the cell since September 2008. Blackboard @ the cell features new work by a Black Playwright every second Monday of the month with bi-annual community nights, giving writers the chance to bring 10 pages of new work to be cold read! v
