Anne Bluethenthal // ABD Productions // Show: Pluto in Capricorn Moves South
Anne Bluethenthal brings to the Santa Cruz stage, 3 astonishing works: Pluto in Capricorn (an incisive, explosive work weaving themes of aging, love, and art with global economic disaster), Daughters Untold (an intimate rendering of a woman inner landscape), and Three Short Solos. Says author, Sarah Stone, "With fluid, surprising, achingly beautiful choreography, Anne Bluethenthal subversively juxtaposes this beauty with urgent subject matter: peace and war; gender, power, and identity; the competing pulls of instinct and society; and honest, tender, unsettling examinations of every form of love."
Anne Bluethenthal's choreography is respected for its formal sophistication, its heart, and its ability to effortlessly bridge the worlds of concert dance, political art, and ritual. Bluethenthal is Artistic Director of ABD Productions, a SF-based, woman centered, multi-cultural dance company, dedicated to creating language of movement that challenges conventional notions of dance and to presenting choreographies that take on difficult issues with eloquence and passion.
Bluethenthal presents the Santa Cruz premiere of the acclaimed Pluto in Capricorn, an electrifying work addressing our global economic collapse, the dismantling of personal infrastructure, and aging as an artist. Pluto includes text by Bluethenthal, Carolyn Cooke, and Judy Grahn, and original music by Marc Ream. "Her creativity is off the charts," says Joe Landini, of In Dance. Sarah Stone, author of The True Sources of the Nile calls it "fluid, beautiful, ferocious, vulnerable, ruthless, and endlessly surprisingNobody that I know of has ever done anything more beautiful with bodies."
Bluethenthal's 3 Short Solos are a distilled tryptich whose subjects range from breath as a metaphor for imperialism (Be Breathed), to the celebration of the common woman (A Woman Whose Head is on Fire), to the granting of constitutional rights to nature (Kudos to Ecuador). "Bluethenthal is among the Bay Area's most charismatic performersBluethenthal doesn't invent steps; she reveals them, as a bit of organic reality preselected for our enjoyment." Janice Ross, Oakland Tribune
Choreographed by Bluethenthal for Chin-chin Hsu, who brings considerable passion and versatility to the role, Daughters Untold - solo section of a larger work on gender violence - "seemed to dig from the earth, or the human body whatever rapture and harmony we are capable of." -- Rita Felciano, Danceview
