Description
At The Hand Of My Mother, the Ward Studio Companys second offering, continues in the tradition of I Wish You A Boat, the Companys premier production which last year earned the company two nominations from the New York Innovative Theatre Awards for Outstanding Acting.  Known for a performance style that confidently embodies the extremes of boldness and tenderness, the Ward Studio Company has created a refreshingly unique piece of theater set in the beautiful simplicity of a 19th Century Irish convent, belying the violent acts that will take place there.  With actors performing in brogue and sign language, live hand bell music, and the use of stunning video projection, At The Hand Of My Mother, does not disappoint.  Rather, the audience takes revival in the special skills this cast has mastered in order to tell the story.

At The Hand of My Mother seamlessly intertwines historical and contemporary accounts of the deaf population's ongoing struggle to communicate and exist on its own terms. Whether being forced to give up her language of signing at the Oralist convent to which she has been sent, or fighting her obsessive signing-only mother for the right to join the hearing world, our young heroine finds herself at the mercy of those who have dominion over her and who claim to know whats best for her. Although the second act climaxes in a shooting that the audience knows to expect from the beginning of the play, the gentleness with which it is juxtaposed against a concert given by a deaf hand bell choir is heart breaking.
