Nighthawks: a fundraiser for the Summer Solstice Jazz Festival

The Summer Solstice Jazz Festival (SSJF) is pleased to announce an exciting fundraising event, Nighthawks on Friday, March 25, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Robin Theatre, 1105 S Washington Ave, Lansing, 48910.

The Rodney Whitaker Quartet will provide the back drop for a night celebrating the male jazz voice, with special guest Benny Benack III and local vocal phenoms Freddie Cunningham, Benjamin Hall and Dee Hibbert.

Tickets for the event are $30 for general admission, $60 for VIP seating. Tickets go on sale Thursday, February 25, 2016, and can be purchased online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2480405 or by calling (517) 319-6980.

Featured performers:

Rodney Whitaker: Internationally renowned bassist and Mack Avenue recording artist, Rodney Whitaker, currently holds the titles of Professor of Jazz Bass and Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University where he has built one of the leading jazz degree programs and performing faculty in the United States of America.  He is considered one of the leading performers and teachers of the jazz double bass in the United States.  Whitaker has performed and toured with over 100+ legendary performing jazz artists over the past 25+ years.  Featured on more than 100+ recordings - from film to compact discs - Whitakers film scores, China, directed by Jeff Wray, was released on PBS Fall 2002 and Malaria and Malawi, released on PBS Fall 2010.  Also, Whitaker has a DVD release featuring Michigan State Universitys Jazz Department entitled, Inside Jazz and three new compact discs entitled, Get Ready & Work To Doboth on Mack Avenue Records and Better Than Alright by Michigan State University College of Music.

Benny Benack III: As a trumpeter/vocalist Benny has quickly gained a reputation for
being an incredibly versatile, fiery improviser who lends superb technique
and musicality to any setting. In the August 1, 2011 issue of "Jet Magazine", Benny was featured on Wynton Marsalis' list of the "Next Generation of Jazz Greats. He has won every major jazz trumpet competition including the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Soloist Competition (2011), International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition (2011), and the National Trumpet competition - Jazz Division (2012). He also was a finalist in the Gentlemen Sing Vocal Jazz Competition (2013), showing his versatility as a singer as well.

Freddie Cunningham:  Has been one of the most-beloved performers in the Greater Lansing area since the late 1980s. He was a featured member of his church choir at the age of 5, and has been dazzling audiences since. Freddie is the vocalist and a founding member of the multi-award-winning soul, R&B and blues band Root Doctor. He has shared the stage with such musical luminaries as Ray Charles, Koko Taylor, Little Richard and Taj Mahal. Freddie has also captivated audiences at numerous nightclubs and festivals including the Poconos Blues festival, the Detroit Jazz festival and Buddy Guys Legends blues club.

Benjamin Hall: Ben is a local musician, event planner, arts advocate and MSU grad that is proud to call the Capital City his hometown. It is has been his lifes ambition to have a wide-range of artistic experiences, including a stint as a semi-professional opera singer. Throughout all of his musical endeavors Ben has always felt most at home performing jazz and blues, and has had the opportunity to perform at the regions finest venues and events, such as Cliff Bells jazz club, the Kalamazoo Blues Festival and East Lansing Art Festival.

Dee Hibbert: Dee could not help but be permanently influenced by the fertile musical environment of his home town. He was born and raised in Detroit, amidst the social upheaval of the civil rights movement and the golden age of Motown Music.  Dee began singing solos in church at seven years of age, and within 10 years was performing throughout the region. He possesses a silky, honey-voiced first tenor range with gospel underpinnings and a 4 octave range. Dee is founder and manager of jazz/R&B band Dee Hibbert & Company. He performed with his band and solo at various Mid-Michigan events, including Common Ground, the BWL Chili Cook-off and the wedding of Ervin Magic Johnson.

The SSJF takes place on June 17-18, 2016, and is presented by the City of East Lansing, Wharton Center for Performing Arts and the MSU College of Music, with artistic direction by Rodney Whitaker.

This FREE musical eventl is centered around a large tent located in the heart of downtown East Lansing in Parking Lot 1 (230 Albert Ave.) on the corner of Albert Avenue and Abbot Road.

Celebrating 20 years of the best in local, regional and national talent, the SSJF features a New Orleans-style Second Line Parade, an avant garde jazz picnic, on-site food vendors, hands-on childrens activities and the MSU Outreach and Engagement Education Stage.
