Join us for an evening with the bestselling author of "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand", to celebrate the publication of her highly anticipated second novel, "The Summer Before the War".
East Sussex, 1914. It is the end of England's brief Edwardian summer, and everyone agrees that the weather has never been so beautiful. Formidable local matriarch, Agatha Kent, has just risked her reputation by publicly pushing for the appointment of a female Latin teacher but when Beatrice Nash arrives, with one trunk and several large crates of books, she is not as old or as meek as expected. As Beatrice navigates the strictures of small town life, an unimaginable war looms. The true limits of progress, and the old ways, will be tested as this small Sussex town and its inhabitants go to war.
Of "The Summer Before the War", Simonson says "I think the whole world can be explained in a small town and I believe in the illuminating power of humor to explain and process the absurdities of war. Though I hope you'll laugh and love with my characters in their Edwardian summer idyll, buy the end of the book, I fully intend to break your heart."
Tracy Guzeman is the author of the acclaimed novel The Gravity of Birds. She has written for Gulf Coast, Vestal Review, and Glimmer Train Stories.
