"Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii"
In celebration of what would have been The King's 81st birthday (January 8, 1935), we will screen the rarely seen "Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii" concert on Saturday, January 9, 2016.
The big "El" made TV and entertainment history with this concert special; a performance that took place at the Honolulu International Center (now the Neal Blaisdell Arena) on January 14, 1973.
Because the concert was initially being sent live via Globecom Satellite to countries primarily in the Pacific region (Australia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, The Philippines, South Vietnam and several others) and to accommodate the day and time difference, the show started at 12:30 am Hawaiian time! It attracted 38% of the viewers in Japan, 92% in the Philippines, 70% in Hong Kong and upwards of 80% of the viewers in Korea. It was seen on a delayed basis in approximately 30 European countries shortly after.
The special didn't air in the U.S. until April 4, when an edited version of the concert, expanded with songs videotaped just after the live event, was presented on NBC attracting over 50% of the U.S. TV viewing audience.
All in all, it's estimated that the total worldwide viewing audience was over 1 billion (that's with a "b"), still the most in TV history! While we don't even give a second thought to events presented via satellite today, in 1973 this was a first. Never before had one performer held the world's attention in such a way.
On January 14, 2013, fans from around the world gathered in the same venue where Elvis performed the concert 40 years before to watch this newly edited version of one of Elvis' most outstanding concert performances of his career. This will be the same version our audience sees on January 9, 2016. . .43 years after this groundbreaking show in which Elvis wears, for the first time, the self-designed iconic outfit: the American Eagle Jumpsuit along with the cape that he later threw to a member of the audience.
