Selecting and Growing Cane Berries in the Home Garden and Small Farm
Join Christof Bernau, Farm Garden manager at the UCSC Farm, for a wide-ranging class that will equip home gardeners and small farmers with the information needed to successfully grow, harvest and enjoy cane berries: blackberries, raspberries and their near relatives.
Christof will discuss site selection and soil preparation, trellising strategies, sourcing bare root plants, and the difference between primocane and floricane growth habits. The class will also cover when to plant, fertility strategies, initial and ongoing pruning, irrigation management, pest and disease control, summer maintenance, harvesting, and resources for further study.
This workshop takes place at the UCSC Farm on Sunday, January 31, from 9:30 am - 12:30 pm. THIS WORKSHOP TAKES PLACE RAIN OR SHINE.
Online registration costs: $30 for general public, $20 for Friends of the Farm & Garden members, $15 limited income, $5 for current UCSC students. Or pay at the door (cash or check only): $40 for general public, $30 for Friends of the Farm & Garden members, $20 limited income, $5 for current UCSC students.
