Ioan Grillo: Gangster Warlords: Drug Dollars, Killing Fields, and the New Politics of Latin America.
KPFA Radio 94.1FM presents:

IOAN GRILLO
Gangster Warlords: Drug Dollars, Killing Fields, and
The New Politics of Latin America
Hosted by Vylma V

A new kind of criminal has arisen: part CEO, part terrorist, and part rock star, unleashing guerrilla attacks, strong-arming governments, and taking over much of the world's trade in narcotics, guns, and human beings. What they do affects you nowfrom the gas in your car, to the gold in your jewelry, to the tens of thousands of Latin Americans wanting refugee status in the U.S.  From the author of the critically acclaimed El Narco,  Ioan Grillo brings us the shocking story of these ruthless men who command the cartels through Latin America.  Gangster Warlords: Drug Dollars, Killing Fields, and the New Politics of Latin America is the first definitive account of the crime wars now wracking Central and South America and the Caribbean, regions largely abandoned by the U.S. after the Cold War.

"Terrific...Essential reading." Steve Coll, The New Yorker

Grillo has covered Latin America since 2001 and gained access to every level of the cartel chain of command in what he calls the new battlefields of the Americas. Moving between militia-controlled ghettos and the halls of top policy-makers, Grillo provides a disturbing new understanding of a war that has now spun out of control one that people across the political spectrum must confront right now.

Grillo has reported on Latin America since 2001 for international media including Time magazine, Reuters, CNN, PBS News Hour, CBC, the BBC World Service and others. His first book, El Narco: Inside Mexico's Criminal Insurgency, was translated into 5 languages, and was a finalist for the L.A. Times' Book Prize and the Orwell  Prize. A native of Britain, he lives in Mexico City.

Vylma V is Puerto Rican, an activist, human rights attorney, and former public defender. Currently for KPFA she is the news editor for La Raza Chronicles, one of the hosts for Women's Magazine, and has guest-hosted for Livingroom, Saturday Morning Talkies and UpFront.  She is also the executive producer of Goddess on the Radio, which airs on KPFB 89.3 every Saturday at 2pm.
