"The Death and Life of Two American Cities"
Bryant Lake Bowl Cabaret Theater
Minneapolis, MN
Share this event:

Join New York City writer Ada Calhoun, author of the new book St. Marks Is Dead: The Many Lives of America's Hippest Street, and Minneapolis writer Andy Sturdevant, author of Downtown, a collection of street photographer Mike Evangelist's depictions of downtown Minneapolis in the early 1970s, for a fun, enlightening multimedia night at Bryant-Lake Bowl & Theater, just doors down from a Chipotle, for Gentrification Realness. The night will feature rare photos and archival material from both cities, and smart takes on punk rock, gentrification, housing, anarchy, rehab, and urban decay.

Andy Sturdevant is a writer and artist living in Minneapolis. His first book of essays, Potluck Supper with Meeting to Follow, was published by Coffee House Press in 2013 and praised by the Minneapolis Star Tribune as "inquisitive, witty and intelligent." He is also the author of Downtown, a collection of street photographer Mike Evangelist's depictions of downtown Minneapolis in the early 1970s, to be published in November 2015 by the Minnesota Historical Society Press. Andy also writes "The Stroll," a weekly column on neighborhoods, art, history and architecture in Minneapolis and St. Paul for MinnPost. He was the host of Salon Saloon, a live-action arts magazine produced by Works Progress at the Bryant-Lake Bowl from 2011-13.

Journalist Ada Calhoun is the author of St. Marks Is Dead: The Many Lives of America's Hippest Street (W.W. Norton & Co., November 2015), one of "the most compelling nonfiction titles set to arrive in bookstores between now and December" according to The Millions. In a starred review, Kirkus calls it "An illuminating stroll through the decades of one of the most culturally significant streets in Americaengagingly personalrevelatory." She has freelanced extensively for The New York Times, worked as a crime reporter on the New York Post's City Desk, and been a ghostwriter of seven books for major publishers, including four New York Times bestsellers. She is half North-Dakotan-Norwegian-Lutheran, and loves visiting Minneapolis, even in December.
