The BREW: Charming Hostess and Tsipi Gabai
JCC East Bay Berkeley, CA
Charming Hostess will present their work in progress, The Bowls Project. The performance installation is based on sex, magic and the apocalypse in Babylonian Jewish amulets. Meditating on the connection between material and literary culture, canonized and marginalized voices, ritual power and popular practice, this promises to be a gem for those interested in deep text analysis and demonology. Not for the faint of heart!
Rabbi Tsipi Gabbai kicks off the evening signing traditional sephardic melodies, and is accompanied by Katja Cooper on percussion. This strikingly varied co-bill offers a chance to reflect on our connection to the traditions of the past and their place in an increasingly complex modern world.
