Voice of the New World The VITA Symphony Orchestra is featured in a program culminating in a complete performance of Dvorak's New World Symphony. The program also presents the diverse voices of New World composers of the past 100 years. ******** Antonin Dvorak was brought to the American Conservatory in the 1890's specifically to work with American composers to develop an American voice in classical composition. Harry Thacker Burleigh, who studied with Dvorak at the American Conservatory and introduced Dvorak to African American folk music, also assisted Dvorak in the copying of orchestral parts for the first performance of New World Symphony. Dvorak concluded that an American compositional style should be built on the primary folk idioms of America - African American and Native American music. The New World Symphony was planned to launch that style.
This program explores the myriad influences of folk music on American classical music in the 120 years since the premier of the New World Symphony.
